Walking Tour of the Burnidge Forest Preserve - May 20
A 90-minute walking tour of the glacial features and habitats of Burnidge Forest Preserve lead by Mary Alice Masonick. Elgin's Burnidge Forest Preserve abounds with the evidence of glacial features such as kettles and moraines.
Memorial Day at the Bluff City Cemetery - May 28
An Elgin tradition since 1868, this years' program will be dedicated to all returning veterans and recognize the 180th anniversary of General Winfield Scott’s march through the area as part of the Blackhawk War. Special tribute will be paid to two soldiers from that conflict, who are buried near the Fox River in the John Duerr Forest Preserve south of the city.
Hidden Treasures in Elgin's Back Yards - May 30
Transportation in Elgin's early days was mainly by horse-drawn wagons, coaches and carriages. Thus, accessory structures were built behind homes to house and keep feed for animals. Many such buildings remain in Elgin, most adapted to other uses.
