Corridors Available for Redevelopment
In addition to the renovation and restoration of many historic downtown commercial properties, the City of Elgin has identified key corridors around the Center City area for redevelopment. Within these areas are several opportunities for development of older commercial and vacant sites:
  • Summit Street Corridor- This corridor is the key route connecting Elgin to Hoffman Estates providing access to I-90 from Beverly Road. In recent years, many new housing developments have been constructed on Elgin’s east border, from Elgin to Rt 59, bringing enormous spending dollars to the one-three mile radius.
  • Dundee Avenue Corridor - Over 20,000 vehicles travel on Dundee Avenue from the tollway exit each day. Many historic buildings along the corridor have successfully been restored for commercial and residential use, including the Shoe Factory Lofts at Dundee and Congdon, and the Old Fire Barn at Dundee and Slade.
